Filed an Extension? Don't Wait Until the Last Minute
By Natausha Williams, The Finance Lady September 24, 2026
A filing extension generally gives you more time to submit a return, but it does not make the preparation work disappear. Using the extra time intentionally can reduce last-minute confusion.
An extension is not the same as an extension to pay
Payment rules and filing rules are not identical. Depending on your circumstances, interest or penalties may continue even when an extension was filed.
Use the time to complete your records
Bring bookkeeping current, locate missing income forms, review estimated payments, and separate business from personal activity.
- Reconcile business accounts
- Categorize income and expenses
- Collect missing tax forms
- Review notices and prior-year carryovers
Leave time for questions
Submitting records early gives you and your preparer time to identify gaps, correct bookkeeping issues, and discuss questions before the extended deadline.
Practical next steps
- 01Confirm your extended filing deadline.
- 02Create a checklist of missing records.
- 03Set an earlier personal deadline to provide complete information.
